3.2 million registrable domains use internationalized names
A look inside the fixed GetDomainLists release of 16 October 2026: 306,042,862 registrable domains and 1,235,195,702 subdomains. Names that contain non-ASCII characters, such as accented Latin letters or non-Latin scripts, are represented in these files as ASCII A-labels starting with xn--. Names only — historically observed names, not evidence that any name currently resolves or hosts content.
- Registrable domains with an xn-- label
- 3,228,891
- Under an internationalized ending
- 566,904
- Subdomains with an xn-- label
- 4,339,288
1.1% of registrable domains
126 internationalized endings
0.4% of subdomains
An internationalized domain name (IDN) contains characters outside ASCII, such as accented Latin letters (ö) or another script (ไทย, рф). IDNA represents each such label as an ASCII A-label that starts with xn-- (Punycode), and that form is what the files list, one name per line.
How many names use them
| Names with at least one xn-- label | Names | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Registrable domains | 3,228,891 | 1.1% |
| …in the name you register | 3,213,979 | 1.1% |
| …in the ending | 566,904 | 0.2% |
| Subdomains | 4,339,288 | 0.4% |
| …left of the registrable domain | 985,203 | 0.1% |
Most internationalized registrable domains are internationalized in the name itself, not the ending: 3,213,979 have an xn-- registered name, 566,904 sit under an internationalized ending, and some have both.
The internationalized endings with the most domains
The domains file has names under 126 internationalized top-level domains. The ten largest:

|---|---|---|
.xn--p1ai | .рф | 474,149 |
.xn--o3cw4h | .ไทย | 32,944 |
.xn--fiqs8s | .中国 | 8,144 |
.xn--p1acf | .рус | 7,311 |
.xn--90ais | .бел | 6,612 |
.xn--80adxhks | .москва | 3,681 |
.xn--3ds443g | .在线 | 2,523 |
.xn--j1amh | .укр | 2,431 |
.xn--5tzm5g | .网站 | 1,884 |
.xn--h2brj9c | .भारत | 1,594 |

Working with xn-- names
Count the names with an internationalized label without unpacking the file to disk:
gzip -dc domains.txt.gz | LC_ALL=C grep -cE '(^|\.)xn--'
On the domains file of this release it prints 3,228,891. To show a name the way people read it, decode it with an IDNA-aware library; with Python and the idna package:
python3 -c "import idna; print(idna.decode('xn--o3cw4h'))"
It prints ไทย. Before matching your own names against the files, convert them the other way with idna.encode, because the files hold only the xn-- form.
What this data cannot tell you
- The language of a website or where its owner is: the script of a name or an ending says nothing about either.
- Whether a name is live, resolves in DNS, or serves a website today.
- Everything on the internet. Coverage is incomplete and uneven across endings; these are counts in this release.
